Hold Your Breath - Katie Ruggle - Review

Hold Your Breath
Search and Rescue #1
By Katie Ruggle

In the remote Rocky Mountains, lives depend on the Search & Rescue brotherhood. But in a place this far off the map, trust is hard to come by and secrets can be murder...

As the captain of Field County's ice rescue dive team, Callum Cook is driven to perfection. But when he meets new diver Louise "Lou" Sparks, all that hard-won order is obliterated in an instant. Lou is a hurricane. A walking disaster. And with her, he's never felt more alive...even if keeping her safe may just kill him.

Lou's new to the Rockies, intent on escaping her controlling ex, and she's determined to make it on her own terms...no matter how tempting Callum may be. But when a routine training exercise unearths a body, Lou and Callum find themselves thrust into a deadly game of cat and mouse with a killer who will stop at nothing to silence Lou-and prove that not even her new Search and Rescue family can keep her safe forever.

Hold Your Breath by Katie Ruggle, is a romantic suspense.  This book is full of intrigue, action and adventure with a touch of romance.  This book packs a punch it's not only is a slow burn romance, but there is the mystery surrounding the identification of a headless body and a stalker who is volatile and has violent tendencies.

Lou Sparks and Callum Cook fit the old adage that opposites attract.  Lou is quirky, bubbly, disorganized, whilst Callum is the strong silent alpha with obsessive compulsive tendencies, he's a complete neat freak.  Whilst Cal is serious and occasionally sarcastic, he personifies a perfectionist, whilst Lou is just the opposite, a spitfire who sometimes acts first, thinks later and has a tendency to mess up. Cal has a tough exterior and is serious with a sarcastic streak, but Lou brings out his softer side getting him to laugh and smile. She loves to create chaos and leave him discombobulated.

"I just want to add a little chaos to your life."

I found the characters to be likable and interesting.  Callum is ex-military and the search & rescue team leader and Lou comes from a family of socialites where she was melded and molded from a young age to conform to her parents wishes.  She finally living her life, the way she wants in the Rocky Mountains.  Lou and Callum both have some trust issues when it comes to love.

Although this book kept me on the edge of my seat, it's not your typical romantic suspense. The romance part of this book is secondary to the crime they are working to solve.

The was thoroughly engaged and enthralled by this book, reading it in one sitting.  I really enjoyed the banter between the characters, and found myself often laughing out loud.

I look forward to reading Fan the Flames, the next book in this series.
