Waylaid - Sarina Bowen

It’s a tale as old as time: the bad boy meets the good girl. He makes a daring proposition. Then the boy gets a mysterious head injury and loses a year of his life…

The first time I meet Rickie, I don’t know what to make of him. The second time we meet, he doesn’t remember the six hours we spent together. Or standing me up afterward.

I’m not the same, either. I’ve got secrets. I’ve told lies. Bad boys aren’t my type, anyway. Even the ones with troubled gray eyes.

But now we’re roommates. Cue the awkward moments in the hallway when he’s wearing only a towel and a smile. He’s determined to win me over, and his talented hands weaken my resolve.

It’s all fun and games until my past rears its ugly head and his secrets come to light, shaking our fragile connection, maybe even breaking it…

Note: this is Daphne Shipley's story. Contents include Vermonty ice cream flavors, nerdy awkwardness, tattoos, and a playboy grandpa.

I read all the way to the highway exit, but I only get halfway through the first article. It’s dense and full of statistical analysis that’s over my head.

By the time Rickie rolls down the exit ramp, I feel the onset of a full-blown case of imposter syndrome. Dr. Drummond is expecting me to be sharp. What if they ask me to work on this type of analysis, and I can’t do it?

“I see the ice cream place,” Rickie says. “But there’s no entrance back onto the highway. What the hell?”

“Doesn’t matter,” I mumble. “It’s three miles down a side road to exit 6.” I close the journal with a sigh. I feel so panicky right now. I’ve always tried to be the smartest girl in the room. But it’s all an act. I’m obviously the worst kind of dunce—the kind that can’t see her own mistakes until it’s way too late. (See: the last twelve months of my life.)

Is it normal to have a midlife crisis right before your twenty-first birthday?

Rickie rolls into the gravel parking lot of the Dreamy Creemee and puts the truck in a shady spot. He rolls down the windows before killing the engine. It’s getting toward dinner hour, so there aren’t many people here. Just a couple of moms pushing toddlers on the swing set.

And I’m quietly having a panic attack in the passenger seat.

I take a slow but shaky breath. Do I even want ice cream? Is there a flavor on that signboard that could take me out of my own head? I reach for the door handle, but Rickie stops me.

“Look," he says. "About that time we shared a ride home from Connecticut...”

No,” I say forcefully. If he makes me relive that embarrassing experience, I might lose my cool. “Just forget it, okay? So what if you ghosted me?”

His eyes widen. But my rant is only picking up steam.

“None of that matters. I didn’t even blame you. And the only way I'm going to make it through this year is if I put Connecticut behind me, okay? Just leave it alone.”

My voice cracks on that last word, and I realize that I might actually cry. Which is a thing I never do. But Harkness College was my dream, and I blew it. My damn eyes get hot and my throat constricts.

“S-so just forget it," I squeak. “It's already in the past. It can just stay there.”

Rickie's gray eyes are soft now. And they're moving closer. To my utter surprise, he leans forward and presses a kiss to my lips.

So soft, my brain sputters.

“Shh,” he says against my lips. His kiss is warm and unhurried. Like a ray of sunshine when you’re shivering.

For once, my squirrel brain forgets to scurry. And I just let it happen. He kisses me again. It’s still gentle. His bright eyes measure me. I don’t know what he sees. But whatever it is, he decides he likes it.

Those soft lips brush and press. Again. And I'm only human. Rickie's surprisingly tender kiss has caught me at a vulnerable moment. I lean in, experimenting with the slide and pressure of his mouth against mine. A sizzle of heat flashes across my skin. It’s the strangest sensation—as if he’s transferred an ounce of that devil-may-care attitude across the steering column and right into my soul. I drink him in, lips parted. Ready for him to take it further.

But then it ends. Rickie sits back, his head cocked to the side, as if in deep contemplation.

I’m bereft. “Wh-what was that for?” I stammer.

I expect a smirk. But his expression remains soft. “You seemed a little freaked. So I brought you to an ice cream place on a hot summer’s day. But that wasn’t enough, apparently. You needed even more distraction. So I gave it to you. And I’m good at that. A real specialist.”

Replying is impossible. All I can do is sit here and try to process that kiss. That lovely kiss.

He really has some nerve.

Waylaid is the eighth title in the True North series, and I’ve been captivated by the Shipley family ever since reading Bittersweet, and Daphne and Rickie’s story didn’t disappoint.

This title is an emotional, sweet, sexy and moving opposites attract romance.  Rickie’s story is quite tragic, whilst Daphne’s is filled with shame and regret.  Both have been left feeling exposed, and vulnerable and have their fair share of secrets.

Daphne Shipley is incredibly intelligent, and sassy, and comes across as quite prickly, and a high maintenance, control freak, but is quite reserved and cautious, with her feelings.

Rickie is such an endearing and likeable hero.  He’s sweet, fun, confident, flirty and charming.  Despite the struggles Rickie has faced he’s the light-hearted and the life of the party.

The banter this pair shares is fun, flirty, feisty, and full of humour.  Their chemistry and affection is undeniable and their connection is intense and passionate.

A thoroughly enjoyable read with strong themes of family and friendship and a touch of intrigue and suspense to keep you completely enthralled.

Totally Folked - Penny Reid

One unforgettable night leads to an unlikely shared connection, and unlikely connections never go unnoticed by the good folks in Green Valley, Tennessee. . .

Totally Folked an all-new small town romantic comedy filled with humor and heart from New York Times bestselling author Penny Reid is available now!

Jackson James follows the rules. He has to. He’s a sheriff’s deputy in a super small town with a super big personality. However, strict adherence to the law during the day has been enjoyably balanced by rakish rules at night. Jackson, typically happy to protect and serve (and serve, and serve), starts questioning the value of wayward evenings when they begin to feel more like being waylaid rather than getting laid. Could it be that Green Valley's most eligible—and notorious—bachelor longs for something (and someone) real?

Mega movie star Raquel Ezra follows only one rule: always leave them wanting more. Strict adherence to this single rule has served her well. Studio execs, reporters, audiences, fans, lovers—no one can get enough of the smart, savvy, and sexy bombshell. But when “generous offers” begin to feel more like excessive demands, years of always leaving has the elusive starlet longing for something (and perhaps someone) lasting.

When Raquel abruptly returns to the quirky Tennessee hamlet, her path crosses with the delectable deputy with whom she spent one unforgettable night. Unfortunately, scandal and intrigue soon follow. Raquel and Jackson must decide which is more important: following their rules? Or, at long last, finding something real.

TOTALLY FOLKED is a standalone, contemporary romantic comedy novel and book #1 in the Good Folk: Modern Folktales series.

The Varsity Dad Dilemma - Lex Martin

★ A sexy, small town sports romance from USA Today bestselling author Lex Martin! ★

What’s worse than having Rider Kingston, the star quarterback, give you the big brush-off because he doesn’t want to get serious? You’d probably think living across the street from him where you get a firsthand view of his hookups, right?

That’s what I thought. Until someone drops off a baby with a note pinned to her blanket that says one of those jocks—either Rider or one of his roommates—is the father. The problem? Baby mama doesn’t mention which of these numbskulls is the sperm donor.

I wouldn’t care about their paternity problems—not the slightest bit—except my brother lives there too. Which means that adorable squawking bundle might be my niece, and there’s no way I’m leaving her unattended with those bumbling football players.

They need my help, even if they don’t know it yet. Once we solve this dilemma and figure out who’s the daddy, I’m out.

I’ll just ignore Rider and those soul-searing looks he gives me every time I reach for the baby. He broke my heart three years ago. He won’t get a second chance.

 $2.99 for a limited time!

As I walk Sienna to her car, she squeals. “Holy crap, is that Rider Kingston?”
Without my permission, my gaze slides across the street to the oversized man-child, who has the gall to be moving furniture shirtless while flexing his stupid abs. Judging by the other sweaty minions pouring out of the two story, Rider’s getting new roommates too.
My eye twitches again, and my focus snaps back to Sienna. “I thought you said you weren’t a fan of football.”
“Oh, I’m not. I can’t sit through an entire game. But I am a fan of football players.” Her gaze turns ravenous as she scans my neighbor’s front lawn. Or, likely, the glistening eight-pack Rider’s put on display. “All that testosterone. Those bulging muscles. That deep, masculine grunting. Oh yeah. Get me one of those!”
She cackles, and Rider hears it.
Of course he does.
Shockingly, he deigns to speak to me.
“Hey, Gabby,” he shouts. “How was your summer?”
I’m not sure when he decided to stop ignoring me, but that’s better than pretending we’re friends, which we’ll never be.
I close my eyes because I don’t need any reminders of his masculine beauty. And I definitely don’t need to see that sexy smirk, the one more powerful than his cannon that took the team to the playoffs last year.
No, I’m not interested in the star quarterback. Not anymore.
Turning on my heel, I wave my middle finger and march back to my house.
Laughter is all I hear as I slam the front door shut behind me.

Faking It With #41 - Piper Rayne

Fake.

Being the heir to Jacobs Enterprises, I’ve been around fake people my entire life. I promised myself a long time ago that I wouldn’t change for anyone. Which is the only reason I’m a professional hockey player who lives on the beach and does as he pleases without answering to anyone—except my father.

And now, my daughter.

Being a single dad wasn’t in the plan but after a one-night stand who took off after the baby was born, this is my reality.

My dad’s been harping on me to quit hockey and join the company for years and now that I’m a father, he’s only intensified his efforts. Until he makes me a deal I can’t refuse.

Insert Lena Boyd, the Jacobs’ family PR rep. She’s beautiful and intelligent and not at all the woman for me—ask anyone.

My dad needs us to act happily engaged and sell the idea that we’re in love. If we’re successful I won’t have to join the family legacy—ever. Of course, I agree.

That’s when things get complicated. I thought I had her all figured out until I found out there was more underneath her judgmental sneers and eye rolls. It feels like everything is coming together for the future I really want—with Lena—until my past ruins everything.

Only his newfound family doesn’t feel the same. One innocent ‘sure’ has the women of the Souls Chapel Revenants MC creating him a dating profile that is too spot on to be comfortable. And just when he decides to delete the app entirely, a particular face catches his eye.

One innocent question of ‘Belle is that you? Do you remember punching me in the throat in high school?’ has him stepping into trouble neck deep, and he doesn’t even realize it until it’s too late.

Perfect Embrace is the eighth title in the Mason Creek series, with each title written by a different author. This title is a sweet, charming, and heartfelt, small town romance that can easily be read as a standalone.

Grayson is a widower and single parent to twin girls Harlow and Hayden, and Fire Chief.   He’s sweet, caring, and a wonderful father, if a tad overprotective at times after loosing his wife in a tragic accident.

Laken owns and runs her own bookstore and she’s had an unrequited crush on Grayson since high school.  She has a huge heart, and I loved her interactions with the twins.

Overall an enjoyable story of love, loss, hope and family.

The Brazen - Willa Nash

The Brazen is the third title in the Calamity Montana series, which I’d highly recommend reading in order.  It’s a small town, forced proximity, friends to lovers romance that is sweet, sexy and heartfelt.

Kerrigan Hale is driven, hardworking, but also sassy, strong and thoughtful.  She’s down on her luck when it comes time to pay her debts but she’s not going to give up without a fight.

Pierce Sullivan is a successful businessman, who has issues from past betrayal, that lead to a closed off persona, but he also has moments where he is incredibly supportive, kind, and possessive.

Both are headstrong, intelligent and feisty leading to banter that is antagonistic, but also flirtatious, and the sparks sizzle with their interactions.

There are cameos from Lucy, Duke and Everleigh within this title and after being introduced to Cal and Nellie, I’m incredibly eager for their story next.

Dirty Toe Drag - Toni Aleo

Dirty Toe Drag by Toni Aleo is now live!

A brand new Nashville Assassins: Next Generation hockey romance standalone

https://geni.us/DirtyToeDrag

Available on all Platforms

Stella Brooks is a woman who knows what she wants. From her first glimpse of Paris Fashion Week at the tender age of eleven, she has only ever wanted to be a designer. Hardworking and dedicated, she knows she can make a success of it.

Until…she is driven to trade fashion for frosting, a move that makes her soul sing but shakes her confidence in her decision-making to her core.

And when you add in that her sexy hookup from her older brother’s wedding is sniffing around again, things are about to get out of hand. Wesley McMillan seems different, no longer putting off love-’em-and-leave-’em vibes, which only adds to Stella’s emotional chaos.

Wesley McMillan has had a thing for Stella since she first served him a fried pickle platter at her mom’s restaurant. He may have only ordered a snack, but he found he wanted a whole meal—in the form of Stella Brooks. How could he not? She’s stunning, smart, and confident. She knows her worth and what she wants, and she owns whatever room she’s in, the ultimate turn-on for him.

He just has two problems: Stella is his best friend’s sister, and she thinks he’s a playboy. The first issue, Wes is willing to face off against. As for the second…Wes doesn’t blame Stella for her assumption. He used to love to play the field, but now that he has his demons under control, he is ready to show her and the world that he is worthy of her love.

Wes may be known for his sick signature move on the ice, but will his dirty toe drag be enough to score Stella’s heart?

Dirty Toe Drag, is the sixth title in the Nashville Assassins: Next Generation series, featuring Stella Brooks, younger sister of Aiden Brooks and daughter of Lucas and Fallon Brooks who have all featured in previous titles.

Stella and Wesley’s story is fun, steamy, and humorous, but also quite emotional.

Stella is a complex character with beauty, intelligence, and talent galore.  She’s incredibly confident, strong willed, and hardworking, and has an incredibly loving and supportive family, but also has a few vulnerabilities and insecurities.

Wesley’s is Stella’s older brother’s best friend and team mate on the Assassins.  He has some anger issues, and a troubled past, but a heart of gold.

Wes and Stella’s relationship is a slow burn romance, but their chemistry and connection is undeniable, and their story heart-warming.

I adored the side characters and loved the cameos from past favorites, but particularly look forward to Emery’s story in the future.

Kissing The Cowboy - Kennedy Fox

After drinking a bottle of wine, Harper tells her business rival that she recently got engaged. Once the hangover wears off, Harper realizes she now needs a fake fiancé or to admit she lied. Wanting to avoid the backlash, she asks her childhood best friend for a favor.

She can pretend she’s not in love with him, but her traitorous body reveals otherwise.

Ethan Bishop will do anything for Harper, even if it’s crazy and means risking his heart. Pretending to be engaged to the woman he’s always loved proves to be difficult—especially when repressed feelings bubble to the surface.

He only wants to help, but everyone in his life sees through his façade.

It’s hard to know what’s real or fake when their private moments turn intimate. When they cross the line and fall between the sheets, the truth is undeniable.

Just as they feared, their friendship’s no longer the same. However, one thing’s certain—there’s no going back now.

**Kissing the Cowboy is a complete stand-alone and can be read without reading any of the other books or spin-off series, but if you prefer to read in order, start with Hitching the Cowboy as the characters and families do interconnect. Suggested for mature readers only.**

Kissing The Cowboy is the fifth title in the Circle B ranch series featuring Ethan Bishop and his best friend Harper. I thoroughly enjoyed this sweet, sexy, small town friends to lover’s romance.

Harper and Ethan grew up as best friends and at some point, they both developed feelings that were stronger feelings, and when Harper needs Ethan to pose as her fiancée, it opens the door for their true feelings to shine.

Ethan has a big-hearted gentleman. He’s a loving, loyal, sweet, sexy and a protective and hardworking alpha, traits that he shares with many of the Bishop men.

Harper is a sweet, hardworking, entrepreneur who is desperately trying to succeed.

The friendship and connection this pair shares is enviable and their chemistry is off the charts.

Overall a well written, fast paced and enjoyable romance and I look forward to the next title featuring this generation of Bishop offspring.
