“I want you, Claire. I want you in every way imaginable. But I can’t lose everything, including you, when this goes sideways between us.”
“Why would it go sideways?” Her voice catches and I hate the uncertainty I always manage to fill her with.
“Because I’m messed up, babe. And I will ruin this. It’s only a matter of time.”
She shakes her head, her eyes as clear as a summer sky. “I don’t believe that.”
I chuckle harshly and move to lean back in my chair.
“If you take me to your bed, Easton, you can’t just walk away from me.”
“I know that,” I say, a strange mixture of anger and relief clogging my throat.
“So don’t.” She throws out, her eyes flaring with challenge.
“Don’t what?”
“Don’t ruin it. You’ve always been a risk taker, Easton. A gambler.”
I blow out a breath, not refuting her statement. Because it’s the truth. I take big risks, willing to lose it all, for that one moment of having it all. “I won’t risk you, Claire.”
The Risk
Taker is the second title in the Boston Hawks Hockey series featuring Claire
Merrick and Easton Scotch. Both characters
had cameo appearances in the first title The Sweet Talker and I was eager for
their story and it didn’t disappoint.
I highly
recommend this title to anyone who enjoys a brother’s best friend romance, sports
romance featuring professional hockey players.
Easton is a
recovering alcoholic who is driven and determined to win his place back on the
Boston Hawks NHL team. He’s got his fair
share of demons and struggles with his self-worth but is strong and more resilient
than he realizes.
Claire is
Easton’s teammate and best friend’s younger sister and she’s had an unrequited
feelings for Easton for quite some time.
Claire is kind, caring, compassionate and creative. She’s a people pleaser and has a tendency to
try and lease the ones she loves, even if its at the expense of her own
happiness.
Despite the
fact that the chemistry between this pair is undeniable; they have their fair share
of struggles due to miscommunication and they both struggle to recognize their
own value.
I look forward
to Torston’s story in The Faker next.
